Thinking of signing with Zhuhai International School (ZIS)? 🇨🇳 Here is a detailed look at the reality of working there—from the beautiful location to the serious banking, housing, and leadership flaws. 📍 The Setup & Location The Good: Beautiful, quiet campus on Qi’Ao Island, 200m from the bay with views of Hong Kong. Close to the HK bridge and a 45-minute bus ride to the Macau border. The Bad: Staff housing areas are 30–45 mins from downtown Zhuhai and suffer from heavy construction traffic. Academics: ~200 students K-12. Small MYP (~15) and DP (~6) classes. It's an IB school that serves as a "stepping stone"—they hire many non-IB certified teachers, train them, and they leave after 2–3 years. Expect extra-curricular duties. 💰 Salary, Housing & Hidden Costs Pay is decent for singles to save/travel, but tight for a family of 4 on one income. School-provided apartments are mediocre. Many teachers move to Gree Coast but must pay out-of-pocket for the rent difference, plus 200 RMB/month for tax certificates. Warning: The school is notoriously slow at reimbursing rent advance (sometimes taking 3–6 months). 🚨 The Money Traps (Crucial for Expats) No Help: ZIS provides zero assistance with remitting money home. Transfers take 30–60 mins at the bank, and your success depends entirely on the clerk you get. The June/July Trap: At contract end, you receive your final salaries, bonus, and flight allowance in June, but the school does not provide tax certificates for June/July. This makes legally transferring your final funds out of China incredibly difficult. ICBC Cards: The ATM cards provided do not work outside of China. ZIS knows this and offers no solution. 10,000 RMB Holdback: The school contractually holds back 10,000 RMB when you leave—excessive compared to local market deposits—and deposits it long after you've left the country. 🛑 Leadership & Management Head of School Andrew Vandermeulen (AVM) operates as a politician rather than an educator—a classic example of the Peter Principle. Zero admin support or direction when solving problems. Total lack of transparency between AVM and the school's Chinese owners. During Covid restrictions, the school actively failed to honor contracts for at least 5 teachers who couldn't return. Summary: Great location and a good place to get initial IB experience, but the administrative headaches, severe exit-banking issues, and incompetent leadership mean you should think twice before signing.
