The long-term outlook for Shekou International School is concerning; without a major shift in direction, I worry this school will face severe structural decline in a few short years. A review of programs and administration is desperately overdue. Under past and present leadership, the school has suffered from an atmosphere of distrust where poor behavior was rewarded, leaving behind a legacy of toxicity and bullying that went unaddressed for far too long. But the most critical concern is ISS and their history of taking $3 million from the school annually while giving nothing back. During her last visit, Liz Duffy even bragged that she hadn’t visited the school in five years. Instead of investing that $3 million a year into hiring a dedicated, top-tier Head of School, they made the easy choice to reappoint previous leadership who had already proven to be ineffective. Until SIS is free from ISS management, I would steer clear. The school, its staff, and its students deserve management that actually understands the local market, cares enough to be present, and provides a viable strategy for the future.
